It's been unreasonably hot the last few days in the South Bay. It's that heavy, muggy heat that I thought I'd left behind in Pasadena; the kind that invades your breath and covers your head with its insistent presence.
I call it spider weather. These temperatures always send dozens of them out from whatever dark places they've been lurking. There are two or three of them living in my bathroom, and fresh webs in several corners of my outside stairwell, besides.
Now I happen to like spiders very much, so this isn't a problem for me. It's also a good thing for this venus flytrap I bought last week. I've always wanted one of these plants and, when I saw some next to an orchid display while I was at the store, I couldn't resist.
Apparently venus flytraps don't really need to eat insects to stay alive, but they do enjoy them. If this does well maybe I'll try to find some other carnivorous plants to raise, because I'm finding this little guy quite fascinating. The only problem? I'd like to find a name for him but can't think of anything. I'm usually pretty good at naming stuff but I'm currently drawing a blank.
